Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) is a safe and effective medical procedure in which the patient breathes 100% oxygen at greater than normal atmospheric pressure. The treatment is given in a specially designed hyperbaric oxygen chamber. The increased pressure provides more oxygen to the body. Greater amounts of oxygen are dissolved into the bloodstream than is possible under normal atmospheric conditions, which in turn has a significant effect on damaged tissue and promotes healing.

The oxygen is administered to the patient by means of a mask or a hood.

The amount of oxygen dissolved in the blood alone can be sufficient to support life in the absence of red blood cells.
